Angkor Thom

Aug. 8th, 2010

Angkor Wat is absolutely huge. The first day we covered Angkor Thom which translates to the “great city” which was the capitol city of the Khmer empire. The photos below speak for themselves. Enjoy.

Apsara Dinner

Aug. 8th, 2010

After a long day of looking at Angkor Thom, our Tuk Tuk driver suggested that we need to goto a Aspara performance to experience the real Cambodia. We figured why not and went. It was an absolutely lovely evening. Apsara is heavily influenced by the depiction of dancing apsaras at the Angkor Wat temple complex. It was really cool to be able to see the old cravings in the temples translate into modern dance. During the performance it rained so heavily that they had to stop it because the dancers could not hear the music. It was surreal.

Angkor Wat

Aug. 8th, 2010

The second day in Siem Reap we woke up at 4:30 AM so we could be ready at 5AM when our Tuk Tuk driver was to pick us up from the hotel. The reason we chose to wake up at such a ridiculous hour was the catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. We stumpled in the dark through swarms of mosquitos to the inside of the complex where we patiently waited to see what so many find awe inspiring. At first we thought it was going to be somewhat disappointing because it was rainy and gray. But for a brief second we saw shades of orange and red which was incredible. After the sunset we went to explore Angkor Wat which was fantastic becuase it was practically enpty since it was so early. Here are our photos!
