Koh Samui

Jul. 18th, 2010

We arrived in Koh Samui the 15th. We were picked up from the airport and taken to our romance package hotel. We were greeted with apple juice and escorted to our suite. Our room had a huge leather couch and there were flowers on the bed. Romantic right? Ah but who could forget the broken safe which the staff fiddled with for roughly the first 30 minutes we had our room. Later we found our room was still occupied by some previous tenants: frogs, lizards and a cockroach. Also our secluded room was flanked by two large and noisy families. So much for romance.

The next day we walked along the beach, recieved our couples massage (part of the romance package) which was nice and ended up going to have a lovely dinner at betelnut which was fantastic.

Koh Samui was not what we expected. Very built up and touristy. Congested and impossible to relax. The package we booked was not what we expected either… So we had a few good laughs about it. What can you do. On to the next island.

Paradise Found on Koh Phangan

Jul. 18th, 2010

We finally found our paradise!

We took a boat from Koh Samui to Ko Phangan. From the pier we rode in the back of a pickup on windy dirt mountain roads to the northeastern part of the island: Ao Thong Nai Pan Yai. We ended up getting a beach bungalow steps from the ocean on a laid back secluded beach. The grounds are filled with secret hangout areas with amazing wood tables with floor cushions which are surrounded with lanterns and candles. Last night we had a fantastic dinner of fresh tuna and red snapper that was caught in the ocean right in front of our bungalow.

Today we relaxed on the beach and swam. We went back to the same place tonight for dinner and had prawns and baracuda. Delicious. Looking out on the ocean is beauiful. There are boats with captivating lights that are fishing for squid. The sky is clear and filled with stars and the half moon is shining bright. The one bar on the beach is having a fire show tonight that we are going to check out. Life is perfect and beauitful.

The Islands have been amazing. Yesterday we took a day trip snorkeling at Koh Ma (North West part of Koh Phangan), followed by lunch at bottle beach and ended with a short hike up to the Thaan Sadet waterfall. Today we are leaving to goto the island of Koh Tao.
