Traveling Through Uncle Ho’s Town

Jul. 31st, 2010

We originally were going to stay only a few days in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) but decided that we wanted to take a closer look at this chaotic metropolis. So far we have seen quite a lot. One day we saw the National Art Museum, it was a little underwhelming, but for 50 cents each you really can’t complain. Ate dinner at a really cool restaurant where the kitchens are organized into categories of food that line the walls of the dining area. And ended the night wandering the streets of District 1 where we saw the Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral and The People’s Committee Hall. The next day was mainly dominated by travel plans, but yesterday we went to a Vietnamese Water Puppet Show. It was slightly cheesy, but much more distracting was the obnoxious audience who kept using flash photography, talking on cellphones and recording the entire performace. We ended up moving to the back of the theatre to avoid being in the middle of it all and being forced to watch the entire performance through the guy’s camera in front of us. After the performance we went to the Black Cat for dinner, where we ordered possibly the best and largest burger ever, “The Big Cheese”. The goodness inside the burger: 3 tomatoes, 1 head of lettuce, 1 onion, 4 pieces of cheese, 6 strips of bacon, 500 grams of meat and one oversized home made sesame bun. It weighed in at over 3 lbs total and we managed to eat just under half of it…still we gave it our best. The burger was delicious, but ideally we needed two other friends to help us. Well that’s it for now, today we are going to Cholon, the largest China Town outside of China, to see Pagoda’s and hopefully find Dim Sum. Yeah!
